In a moments boredom while I waited for paint to dry- on house not car- I thought I would see how much of a bother changing the discs would be, in an effort to run down the vibration under braking I get.

The answer was not much bother other than getting the disc itself off. These look to be the originals and I can't shift them. In fairness I have mislaid my copper hammer and the hammer and block of wood gets tiresome when you have hit your fingers a few times. Tried a bit of gentle heat and have sprayed some penetrant through the bolt holes.

Any other tips?

Hi Mark

Have you removed the spacers and calliper so etc first? (Sorry for silly question..)

I would try using standard hammer and rotate the disk each time as you hit it, brings back a saying my father has in these circumstances 'only held on by poverty' no idea what it means in reality but always meant when something that should come off was a right pain......

Hi Peter

The caliber, carrier, 2  retaining bolts and spacer are off and I don't think anything else holds them on?

Looking at the rear of the new discs, there is quite a large potential contact area to stick / corrode so I share your fathers frustration at present. Will try the tap and turn again in the morning before work in the hope that the penetrant may have helped.

It seems counterintuitive but hit the corner of the bit that sticks out (ie the bit that goes over the hub)  - don't try to knock it off from behind. Take the spacer off first if its fitted!

There's plenty of meat on that bit so you can give it a few good whacks with a heavy hammer  - that will break the rust and allow you to remove it. You'll see through the bolt holes when it starts to come free from the hub.

 You sound like you are a bit of an expert of hitting things!

That would also remove the need to spend on a new copper mallet, giving me time to find the missing item.

Thanks Stuart, I'll give it a whack.

I've put it all back together for now as it's going to have the tank off tomorrow and I'm stuck for time tonight, so needs to drive about.

I know this one. I always took it as if you can't afford to break it you won't try hard enough to get it off. If you had a new one ready to go then you would just smack it with the biggest hammer you had.

I guess the main worry is not so much the disk, but the possible damage to the bearing.

Yeah very true, but then the saying rings true again, if you didn't have to worry about the cost of replacing any of the parts you could smack it off in a jiffy. Grin Roll Eyes

I'd be astonished if all the parts they are listing are actually available, although someone has taken the time to upload all those parts descriptions to the site. Likewise, unless you speak Hungarian it's a complete waste of time. Do we have any Hungarian speakers on the site (other than the OP, of course)?

I did get a response from the poster which looks genuine so happy to keep him as a member. Hopefully his/her responses may be a little more descriptive. Also would be useful to find a source for the standard brake disks at sensible price which appears to have been an issue over recent years.
