Dear All,

I have just had another axle splined joint fail rather prematurely. Does anyone know the cause of this and any  permernant modification to correct it.

I'd not heard of a spline failing.
Is this inner or outer and on which side?
Each spline is mated to the cv joint with a round circlip which gives a 'lock' effect,i.e. to stop
excessive lateral movement. The only lateral movement is generated by the limits of the suspension travel.
Which, under normal road use, is very slight indeed.

Hi Nigel,
This is a cylindrical part which the axle slides into and you are correct excessive suspension travel may cause it to drill its way through the splines. Just wondering if any one else has had a similar problem!

My uncle had several HPE's in the eighties/nineties. His last one was a 2.0 i.e. and that particular car also suffered this problem. I remember the garage changed the part the first time, but after a few months he had the same problem again and then the garage decided to weld it to the driveshaft... but that did not last long either. Finally he gave up on the car  Sad The reason why this kept happening, was never found...  Undecided
