I've fitted some additional gauges for oil pressure and water temperature, 12v and earth aside, the signal wire for both, can it be spliced off the original wiring to give readings? Or will effectively splitting the wiring to two gauges (as I would like to keep the originals active) cause mayhem?

I suspect this may not work but more importantly if you are looking for accurate readings you'd really need to use better sender units anyway

I would guess that is the case too, perhaps i'll have to fit another union to run two senders

If you can always go capillary for oil pressure - they're pretty much infallible.

This would cause a parallel current path via the two gauges to earth, and cause neither of them to read correctly.  Both are standalone and matched...sender - instrument schemes.

See my post on "sump removal" there is some useful info there.
