Title: beta coupe 1979 - 1600 from belgium
Post by: fred2660 on April 13, 2017, 09:16:07 PM
hello

my name is fred and live in belgium, antwerp. I bought myself a coupe from 1979, original dutch car. i am new to lancia's . i restored a toyota celica ta23 in the past and have also a mazda 929 coupe from 1976.

being new to the beta's i didn't know where to look when i bought it. I trusted the cardealer but that was a mistake (never trust a cardealer  :D) At first glance theres little rust, but the more i digged into the car i found more and more. thats not a real problem because i wanted to learn to do a real restoration, welding included. So I started the restoration about a month ago. I found rust on the 'usual places':  back turrets, sills,

here some pictures from when i bought it

Welcome Fred. What a nice looking car, such a shame it hides some problems.

You will find plenty of help and advice here.

Mark

Hi Fred,
I also live in Antwerp and I have had Betas for over twenty years now.
If you need parts or want to compare stuff with my cars, just let me know ;-)

Is that a later grill? Are these interchangeable, I wonder as i like the look of the earlier S1 and 2 cars?

this is the current condition of the car. I am trying to remove all the rust and repair the bad spots. this is my first big restoration so i make mistakes. I dont have all the proper equipment so i have to improvise a lot and work in very uncomfortable possitions. I dont have repair panels so I cut out the rusty spots and make patches out of new sheet metal (1mm).  i am not aming for perfection

Nice work man !

I am equally as new to this as you are.  My car which is the same model and year as yours has much worse rust then what you got here.. Some places that I found rusted extremely bad were locations where you would put the car jack under. Mainly the rear left and right sides just in front of the outer wheel arch might be worth looking into that's all.
Your welding is pretty good probs better then mine  :-X
Please keep the photos coming be really interested to see how she comes along ..

Fairly typical rust does for a beta, nice work. By the jack places do you mean the square brackets with round holes? If so they are rust traps but are not meant for jacking the car they were used to carry the body shell in the factory.

yes, i meant those. haha i jacked my car on those things and the surrounding steel collapsed totally. rust traps indeed
now i am hesitating of replacing them , however it ads to the originality

i removed the gastank and removed the rust in search for possible holes. I found a little hole on the topside but its shape make me believe that its a factory made hole. Is this correct?
thanks

I think we would need to see a picture. Do you mean on the tank itself?

yes, a hole in the tank itself

Hi

There should only be the main hole for the combined in/out/level sensor. There was also a small pipe at the top for venting, some tanks may have extra pipes I guess, but no extra holes.

I checked the other strut ... and the same story

I looked at the front struts and they seem to be ok.

i am actually kinda shocked by the poor quality of this part. I have done other restorations of rusty cars but the struts were always in a decent condition.

anyway... continued my battle with the rust and removed some (typical?) panels

Thanks for that ...  I AM SO GOING TO BUY ONE ! .. I have been using angle grinder for must rust removal this shall help !

And yeah same damage to my car my friend. I removed the panel made a template cut the sections out that could be saved like where the fuel pump goes etc.  And welded it onto fresh steel .. Simple welded it back in make it fully sealed .,.. then used fiber glass + body filler to 100 % seal it and make it look smooth...

that's it not 100% done but getting much closer !

When it came to doing the back like your doing right now I also removed the inside panel makes it easier to seal when you put it back together .. yet again all very ruff at the mooo

started working on the left door today , a bit of rust but not too scary. more important the electric window is operating just fine. connected it to a battery and it went up and down, and up and down...woohoo!!

Nice work ! Not got to the doors yet on mine  :-\      .. I would advise using fiberglass or body filler on some of the worlds as you will probs allow water into the car.. that or it will just just again.  Rust primer and paint only does so much   .....

anyways. I redid the rear left inner fender. the car really starts to look like frankenstein

still looking for braking discs and the iron rings between the coil and the rubber in the rear suspension.

A lot of grinding and painting going on and today I reassebled a rear caliper. goddamn what a frustrating job. In the end I managed it but not looking forward for doing the other one. It took me more than two hours to find the way to do it, and i hope i did it right  (the posts in the technical pages were helpfull but in the end you have to find your own way)

after rebuilding the caliper I keep on questioning myself how the whole mechanism works.  I dont understand how the piston can move up and down (by pressure of oil or air) in the caliper when the bolt in the back of the handbrake is screwed in the piston. the piston doesnt turn, neither does the bolt.

who can explain in easy words?
thanks

Even a professional brake rebuilding company screwed up re-assembling my rear calipers, so not an easy job unfortunately.

The screw mechanism provides adjustment for the handbrake whilst the pads wear. The problem that is being solved is how to have two systems acting on the same pair of pads to provide retardation when in motion and to secure with the handbrake when stationary. When you assemble the caliper screw the adjuster part all the way in whilst still aligning the components. This acts as a ratchet adjuster. Visualize the cylinder moving toward the pad but the screw insert not being allowed to rotate. the intermediate section will rotate on the thread but not when the handbrake is activated.

The piston  should be fully inside its cylinder when you assemble everything and fit it to the car. When you pump the brakes in for the first time so that the pads are pressed onto the disc the screw thread of the adjuster will unwind and take up most of the travel so that it is near the disk for the use of the handbrake too. When your foot comes off the brake and the pressure in the braking system is off, the pads are free to come off the disc by an infinitesimally small amount allowing it not to bind.

The pads are then close to the disc and activating the handbrake applies a new force to press the pads onto the disc to hold the car. There is a a small tolerance of free movement so that the pads can again move off the disk when the handbrake is released.

I hope this helps.

thanks dougdee, ok i'm starting to understand. the inner mechanism of the piston can rotate independatly, so the piston can go up and down whilst the screw does not turn.

I checked it

thanks for the clarification

Now I had to start on the other caliper and knowing all this I decided to not to disassenble it totaly . I decided to leave the handbrake mechanism intact

I cleaned it but didnt feel like to do the whole operation again. instead I would screw the piston over the screw from the top off the caliper.
I cleaned the inside of the caliper and placed the new o-ring wich i covered with some special grease. This grease makes it easyer for the piston to be pushed in

Interesting, just curious why use grease, albeit special type, rather than just use brake fluid to lubricate the bore?

some of my self made tools and home set-ups.
sometimes they work, sometimes not.  removing the wheelbearing from the rear hub is a real battle

now I am thinking to replace the ARB bushes with the rubber ones or the PU ones. any thoughts?

after a couple of days strugling with the vice and hammers and a lot of frustration i decided to buy a cheap hydraulic press. in a couple of minutes the hub was released from the axle and the bearing was out of the hub.  :)  It looks like the former owner has 'worked' on this hub already

also bought new wheel bearings of QH, relatively cheap

I am working on the front suspension. I dismantled the front wishbones and ordered new bushes. In the haynes manual there is a difficult explanation how to remove and replace them, needing special tools. Off course I dont have those tools, and i dont think my replacement bushes are originals. They seem to be Poly.

My plan was to use the spacers from the old bushes and reuse that and just press the new bushes in. Has somebody any experience with this . comments are highly appreciated. Thanks

I also bought new rear ARB bushes (photos later)

Hi

For the front bushes, a press or long bolt etc will do to get the new bushes in. I used Poly ones and I put the bushes in first by hand and then pressed the central spindles in after, cannot remember if I needed to use a bolt to do it or not, guess it depends how difficult the bushes prove to be.

disassembling the brake booster was hell. I couldn't reach the top bolts so I had to disassemble the pedals also (which wasnt the plan). In the haynes manual its easy explained how to take the pedals out, but reality was something else. I fear the day I have to reinstall them

the engine bay is quite dirty but the metal is good.

like i said earlier I installed new rear suspension struts. after installing the whole thing and putting the tires back on, it seems to me that the car is sitting high (?) like you can see on the photos.

next job is cleaning and painting the engine bay, cleaning the subframe and installing the front suspension again. than I wil start with filler.

greets

remember I said the metal was good.... aaaahh wishfull thinking

the lower front off the engine bay is a bit rusted. Because the subframe is bolted here to the frame , and I don't want to weld upside down no more, I've cut the whole profile out, so I can repair it in a comfortable , propper way.

thanks boys for the coments

@betaveloce: If i had the space...

I repared the front profile. there was quite a lot of rust and i had to replace a lot of metal. I decided not to cut(?) the welds away.
the welding is going better and better

I seperated the subframe from the engine. very dirty and a bit of rust. The rust is on both sides of the frame on the same place. There is also a piece that is pressed in, probably from jacking up the car.

Hi

Nice work, I enjoyed rebuilding the master cylinder, less so the front wheel cylinders with the really difficult retaining ring.....

On the lower ball joints for the front wishbones, I found one of the new ones I bought, different suppliers for both bought at different times, had too high a threaded section and had to cut it down, otherwise it fouled the drive shaft assembly. I think it was a Delphi one from memory.

Peter

@ peter: you are right. the new balljoint is probably gonna get too high

meanwhile I have put the engine on an enginestand

gonna work a bit on cleaning the thing. its so dirty (promise to myself: next time i do a restoration, i have to have some kind of sandblaster)

During the work on the car I sometimes encounter 'yellow marks'.  Is this a factory thing or something a previous owner has done?

It looks like that ball joint I designed to mount under the wishbone rather than on top of it.

Hi Stuart

The issue is not that. If you mount top or bottom, the thread length and taper still mean the thread butts up against the CV joint when fully tightened.

question: I have never rebuild an engine before. Is it difficult to replace the head gasket?

Check the oil pump clearances while it's apart.

Head gaskets are pretty simple with the engine out. You might want to think about new head bolts.

As regards head gasket you may want to consider changing to stretch type bolts, very late betas used this type, I think many later lancias use the same bolt spec, you would need some ribe tools to tighten them. Also consider modifying the top metal coolant pipe to late spec as on VX, helps with pressure in cylinder head reduces risk of HGF from memory it's just a couple of very short extra pipes to add on

damn. I checked the oilpump clearance and not good.  Tha manual says max 0.15 mm between the gears. I can put 0.2mm between some gears.

what do you think? have to change it?

also the manual says min lenght of the spring is 26.3 mm. Mine measures more like 25.8.

I also found some metal on several different locations in the oil channel. (some in the oil pump, others in the oil breather)
they are all the same

To me they look like a small spring clip that would go around a shaft but I can't think of anywhere that such a clip would be on a beta.

As regards clearances and spring spec. See the link below

Could be the flame trap in the breather hose somehow disintegrated and found it's way around everywhere?

yes, that must be it.

damn, then there are still a lot of metal pieces to be found. I checked both hoses connected to the breather, but nothing to be found there.

Okay, so I ordered a new flame trap (and some other things).

Not knowing what the function of the oil breather (or crankcase breather) is , i searched some on the internet. This video gives a good explanation of what it does and what the flame trap does.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkNand6EiFM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkNand6EiFM)

I took some pictures of the bottom of the oil breather. Is this complete or is there some part missing (besides the hoses and the bolt)

Have recently taken my unit off for general clean up and re-fit with new seal  (where it locates in port on block).  Looked just like your unit in photo.  Interestingly I didnt appreciate the function of strange gauze/wire in the exit hose - was a bit of a deformed mess but nothng loose, duly discarded.  I'll see if I can make something simple to substitute.

I am in dubio and like your advice.

I dont know the condition of the engine. I have had it started briefly but never drove it. Dont know the compression. Now I got the engine on an engine stand and i am thinking what should I do with it. Leave it like it is, or changing the head gasket or even disassemble the wole head , and why not do a total engine rebuild?

Is there any complete rebuild topic of the engine somewhere on the internet? I have looked but not found

I got the 828B000 engine bloc and 4314402 head

are there things I can check to see the condition of the engine (valves not closing, piston rings leaking,...?)

I have checked the sparkplugs and there is a lot of dry carbon on it.      but i think the wrong plugs were installed:  bpr6es instead of bpr7es

Bwaa, 'just do it', Nike used to say, so.... i took the head off.  The 10 headbolts all said 'tack', first i thought i was damaging them.

I am not a mechanic, (all my automotive knowledge comes from youtube, discovery channel, and if i am not to lazy the haynes manual) but at first sight i have tree remarks:

1) Like the spark plugs showed, the whole combustion rooms are all carbonised

Your engine has been running rich which is why you have black carbon not chocolate brown. Because of this expect worn bores from the excess fuel washing the oil away. You need to measure the bores using a bore gauge against the specification allowed, but I would expect you to need oversize pistons and a re-bore to get the best from the engine.

After  a long winter break I started working on the car again. On the rear end of the car there were some old repairs from a previous restauration. I decided to cut away these patches. Luckely because there was rust on the back side.

Old patches welded over the rust:

So I am rebuilding the front suspension. I installed the wishbones, new balljoints and the cv joints. I found a little hole in the boots off the outer cv joint, so I decided to replace them. I ordered hole new cv kits, inner and outer.

I removed the boots from the shaft, removed the inner cv joint but I can't get the drive shaft from the outer cv joint. Thats where I am stuck for the moment.
BTW: a lot of grease today

Hi

To get the driveshaft off the outer CV I would separate the CV from the hub carrier, then I used a soft metal hammer or steel one if you are replacing the CV and clamped the driveshaft in a vice with the CV hanging don. You then have to strike the CV downwards hard. This is to force the round circling on the shaft to compress and allow the shaft to come out of the CV....

Not elegant, but I do not know of another way!

thanks peter. I managed to do it.... but I got a lot of questions

I dissassembles the both joints, cleaned the parts and reassembled them again

I received the replacement cv joint kits, but i am in doubt of using them. like you can see on the next photo the shaft that goes in the bearing is ribbled instead of the factory one

Hi

The longer splines should not be an issue. The main problem I had with the CV I had was to do with the flange which interfered with the bearing when the whole thing was tightened up. This flange is the replacement for the dust ring which you have removed from the original CV. I had to have it machined to accept the ring. Your Cv may be more compatible and not bind when fully tightened hopefully.

started with the filler. its the first time i do this and follow the instructions from some youtube video. I think its gonna take a lot of time...and dust

the back section, I have to reform it because I welded a selfmade panel i it, but I don't want to use a too thick layer of filler.  So these pictures are my first attempt to get a nice shape. The smoothness is not yet an issue here

I made a little order and will tell if they fit when the clips arrive (shipping costs are low)

Question on the valve springs: mine outer springs are without the specifications in the haynes manuel. they are a little too much pressed together. Replace them?

still working on the body. Definitely not my favourite part of the restoration proces.  It is frustraing because sometimes i may have worked for a couple of hours but I don't have the impression that i made some progress. And on these youtube videos these guys have all the time of the world to spread out the filler, but with me i really have to rush or the filler is already drying out.( sorry for the complaints)

Hi all

I started to put the engine back together. i forgat to take pictures during the process but what did i do?: I polished the valves , installed new valve springs, replaced all the gaskets and seals, new clutch, new clutch bearing, revised oil pump.

still have to change the timing belt, measure the shims and replace the head bolts. Is it so important to change the head bolts?

It’s very worthwhile changing the headbolts, and the stretch bolts used on the later 8v twin cams are a very good upgrade for reliability.

They were also used on late series Betas I don't remember when exactly from but it wasn't just VX models. The original beta stretch bolts used normal heads but are readily exchangeable wth the later ones wth Ribe style heads these offer a more positive grip for torquing up although you need to buy a set of Ribe bits

still not painted, but we are proceeding...

with this coronathing I have a lot of time so I started working on the car again. It still isn't painted because the transporter didn't want to do it until my steering was fixed, so started working on that

but got a question, i pulled the steering rack apart and there are two covers to bolt on the rack, but the haynes manual only mentions one torque setting. for the coverplate off the pinionhouse (19 NM)

What do you suggest as torque for the cover on top of the plastic retainer and the spring?

Thanks

ok, having a problem here. THe engine is out of the car. When I press in the clutch I can rotate the engine easy. When I dont press in the clutch I can't get any movement in the engine whem I try to cranck it. I think the gearbox is in neutral.

So im gonna pull the transmission of the engine and see what the problem is.

Can I remove the transmission leaving the bellhouse on the engine?  --> stupid question, now I know

Thanks

Question. What is the best/easiest way to build in the engine? The car is out for paint, but stands on his wheels, so with subframe. Is it better to take of the hood and lower it in. Or should i take the subframe backboff when the car is back from paint? Thank you,

Fred

I've always found it easier and quicker to put it in from underneath.

If you're limited as to how high you can lift the car you can slide the subframe in from the side  - the wheelarch gives you more room.

Dry
1: 190
2: 202
3: 200
4: 201

Wet
1: 205
2: 225
3: 225
4: 223

Is this okay?

Thanks

Assuming the engine was hot and the throttle wide open for all the tests you have a problem with number 1 and now need to do a leakage test on that cylinder to find out if it is valve, piston ring or head gasket related. Check the tappet clearances on that cylinder stone cold in case they have closed up leaving valves part open when they should be closed.

The leak test tells you if you are re-building the head or the engine.

Sorry

Eric

The engine was cold. It is still out of the car

I installed a new head gasket
Checked the tappet clearance ans changed the shims
Used new head bolts
Polished the valves
...

Do Cylinder Leakage tests not compression tests. You can not test a cold engine reliably on a spinning compression test. If you started at number 4 with a fresh battery throttle wide open it will probably change again.

I the leak down is even fit it and when the smoke finally clears from the oil in the bores and it warms up fully do a compression test with a FULLY charged battery 10 seconds each cylinder.

Good luck.

Eric

Damn, i hoped better news. I thought these results were quite ok.
Should i replace the pistonrings?

Pistons itself are hard to find or too expensive

Title: Re: beta coupe 1979 - 1600 from belgium
Post by: WestonE on June 16, 2020, 08:14:53 AM
Hi Alan

Consistency across cylinders within 5% is the goal 10% on a worn engine AND the test needs to be on a hot engine throttle wide open. If the leakage test shows no problem I would install it. If not you know exactly what to fix ie is it an issue with rings or valves on number 1 OR not an issue at all just not running a compression test correctly.

It also depends on the dome height of the pistons and the cam profile. On a standard Beta I would be happy with those numbers if they were done in the correct test.

the first moment I saw the colour I was like "did I ordered that". But now I am kinda happy with it, its not too serious, a bit funky.

EUREKA, I managed to install the clutch pedal. It was by far the hardest job so far.
There is a pic of all the tools I in one way or the other have used installing the damn thing

I changed the filter in the fueltank. I used a part of classic VW Beetles

I made the gear linkage rod

And replaced the clutch cable which is a bit different from the original one

Fred,

You must by now have an intimate knowledge of your car, I respect your perseverance ( thumbs up )

Does anyone know if the gauze filters on the sender unit are essential If you're replacing your external filter regularly ?

I've heard that some piece this to allow a better flow.

Thanks in advance Andrew

Title: Re: beta coupe 1979 - 1600 from belgium
Post by: HFStuart on July 21, 2020, 12:08:37 PM
They're not essential but they do stop the larger bits of crap from getting through - important if you have an electric pump especially if there's no other filter before it.

An in line filter close to the tank that you change regularly will do the same job. When I first recommissioned my car I clogged three of them before it ran clean so I now use the glass type with the removable filters as you can see better.

Title: Re: beta coupe 1979 - 1600 from belgium
Post by: Sandro on July 21, 2020, 01:02:39 PM
Stuart thank you,

I'll try an inline filter ...Since I recommissioned my beta it's had power drop out problems at certain times. The fuel pump was noisy, so I presumed it was being overworked
( with crud in the tank ) ..both this and the 'missing' disappeared beit briefly when I changed the external fuel filter,

but its back ...at less regular intervals but it's disconcerting, particularly at roundabouts in busy traffic and so on to suddenly lose power. I've bought another filter but it will be much easier to 'see' what's going on with a transparent one. ( and easier to change potentially ) ..I might use both.

It's worth noting that I've also looked at the 'front-end' replacing the battery with a new one and making sure I have good connections etc.

When it's running smooth there's nothing better  ..hopefully I'm not that far off. :)

( Apologies members for straying off the original topic )
Andrew.

I am working on the fuel system.  When i bought the car there was a fuel pressure regulator built in. Fispa Torino.

(https://i.ibb.co/fXVWshc/20200722-174307.jpg) (https://ibb.co/YN4Sxzr)

I am thinking of leaving it out. What would be the benefits for a 1600cc with weber carbs?
Thanks

Post by: Neil-yaj396 on July 23, 2020, 07:40:56 AM
If you have an electric pump I would keep the regulator - better fuel flow if regulated and convenient for filter changes.

Title: Re: beta coupe 1979 - 1600 from belgium
Post by: WestonE on July 23, 2020, 08:57:16 AM
Do not leave it out. You need fuel pressure regulated to 3PSI or the carbs will flood due to pressure forcing the float valves open. You should also check the pressure is 3 PSI with a gauge in line before tuning the carbs.

Note 3 Pounds Square Inch NOT 3 BAR!

I finished  the fuel lines.  I have now an inline filter before the mechanical pump, then the fuel pressure thing after the pump.
I will and shall have clean fuel  :)

I am working on the wires and have a problem.

When i connect the battery the starter motor starts working, even with the ignitionkey out of the contact.

From the battery i have a thick green wire to the starter, from the starter it goes to the alternator, from the alternator to the fusebox and from the fusebox to the + pole on the battery. From the alternator there us also a groundwire and in the starter ther is a smal red wire

Hi Fred

A bit confusing without photos, but have you checked the connections are as per the wiring diagram as sounds like the solenoid in the starter is being activated, disconnecting the small wire to the starter should stop that whilst you fault find.

Peter

Post by: fred2660 on July 27, 2020, 03:11:12 PM
Thanks peter.

I dusconnected the little red wire from the starter: i keeps starting.
I disconnected the wire going to the alternator: it keeps firing

Now there is only the big wire from + battery to starter. En - battery to ground: the starter keeps running. I am totaly confused. I dont understand it.

When i did the compressiontest with the engine out of the car, I had the + battery to starter, - battery to ground on engine. And a little cable on the starter between 2 points to start it up.

Working on ignition. Got good spark on the 4 plugs. I used this method for timing :https://www.betaboyz.myzen.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2099.msg12891#msg12891

This is 10 degrees before tdc on number 4 for static timing. The haynes manuel says 0 degrees ( page 100)

I tried first the manuel procedure and hdad a lot of backfire. Now i set it to 10 degrees, and timing is better, no backfire.

It still only runs when i keep pushing the trotle. If i dont it stalls. Carb ussue i presume

Two things to try to get an idea of what's wrong.

1. When the wipers stop without parking properly try pulling the wiper stalk on the steering column as if you are spraying water on the screen. If it then parks its the connectors on the wiper arm not making a proper connection.
They are little brass connectors with springs that may need cleaning or worse there may be a crack in the base of the stalk where these are located so they don't quite press onto the riveted contacts to complete the circuit.
If cracked only solution is a new arm.

If that makes no difference....

2. Pull back the vinyl sheath over the wiper motor (if its still there) remove the four screws and lift off the brown? plastic cover protecting the wires on the main body of wiper motor.
You can now see the where the wires are soldered onto the contacts on the plastic gear cover and with a little luck you will find one of them has melted and the stylus below no longer makes contact with the track on the worm wheel inside.
Once this contact is broken or melted the intermittent stops working and the wipers refuse to park.

If that's the case you have no option but to source another set of wipers and just change the cover over - assuming it does not have the same fault.

Please note that you can gain access to all this on a right hand drive car, with a little luck a European spec car will just be on the opposite side but still accessible.

Good luck.

Tried both. 1) when i pull the stalk, only the engine of the waterreservoir starts working.

2) pulled the brown cover ( lhd, you have to remove the whole motor). All connection looks ok

Fred,
Are the wipers self-parking in the middle? Or do they simply stop when shut down?
If the former, removing and replacing the wiper arms after a self park will sort it.
If it's the latter, it could be the wiper relay [it's called an interuptor on the wiring diagram]

Hope this helps

Hi

Do the wipers always return to the same point on the windscreen?

Have you disassembled the mechanism? If so it could be that the mechanism was not reassembled at the same position on the motor spindle.

Fred, this tells me they are indeed self-parking. Therefore everything electrical is working fine.
When parked [in the middle], remove the stalks [arms] from the spindles at the body and refit them in the normal
parked position.

Unless i'm missing something.

Where did you get the rear glass from, is it the original bonded glass?
Your coupe has bonded front and rear glass from factory so its bigger, rubber mounted glass is smaller. i know windscreens are smaller for a fact so would assume the same for the rear.
If you managed to fit your cars original glass then its too big surely and pushing the seal out further?
That flap at the bottom is supposed to go under the boot lid there is no trimming involved.

Just a hunch but i think you need the correct glass to match the seal or earlier cars have a different rear window aperture.

That type of seal is good if it fits. The extra rubber 'skirt' ensures the water drains and doesn't damage the cross member as it has on my car.

I thought the trims for the early bonded screens (front and rear) are a different design to the later ones for rubber seal screens. Bonded screens have the trims bonded onto the screen. Rubber seal type trims have a profile on the underside that slots into the rubber seal.

Quite sure i had the original bonded glass. But i have fitted the seal without the window and it fits fine. Ans the window fits in the seal. Why wouldnt it work then?

Don't like the the rubber overlap though

4 and a half years ago, in an impulsive moment, I bought my coupé.  I was not familuar with the beta, or lancia, and was just looking for a Quick project.
Today it passed local MOT.

Its not yet finished, but can finaly take it for a spin.

Thanks for all the advice and help on this forum

What did i do? A lot of welding (way more than anticipated) new subframe, new bushings around, new shocks, Total new brake system, partially rebuild engine, new oilpump, new filters, new sparkplugs, new gearbox, rebuild carb, new grill, paintjob, ...

Still to do: new exhaust, uphulstery, finetuning carb

Hi. I have an issue with the nut that secures the wheelhub and is screwed on the outer cv joint shaft.
In the manual it says 314 nm of torque. If i torque it that hard my wheel is stuck. I cant turn it anymore.
Any thougts?
Thanks

Have you changed the cv joint?

Hi

This is a known problem (by me and a few others at least). Some of the Cv joints which are sold for the Beta bind on the hub. Compare the flange with an old one and you will see they are different. I recently bought two and they need to be machined to fit.

So you can either return it or get it machined which should be a simple job.

The original CV had a dust cover which fits onto the joint next to the flange which goes against the bearing.

That was indeed the problem.

Thanks peter. You warned me for this when i initially installed the new  cv joints, but i didnt understood what you ment. In other cars these nuts are typicly fingertight .
