Title: Axle shaft boots / CV joints
Post by: mwredit on June 24, 2016, 01:47:24 AM
I acquired a virtually rust free '77 Beta HPE a few weeks ago and about to tackle the front axle shaft boots, in which 3 are torn.  I've done these on VW beetles before, which the inners appear to look similar, but the outer joints look different.  Is there a C ring that holds the inner CV joint to the shaft like the inner, or does the shaft just come right out of the joint after the boot is off (this is with the shafts out of the car)?  The Haynes manual is vague on this along with the factory service manual, both which dont give much information regarding this.

Hi,
Outer CV joints have C rings, whereas the inners don't, they are just bolted.

Thanks lukasdeopalenica for the clarification.  I assumed it somewhat from the diagram in the Haynes manual, but it mentioned a circlip and a spacer on the outer CV side which added to the confusion, which only has to do with spacing on the shaft apparently.
