Title: Dragging brakes
Post by: Per on September 06, 2014, 05:42:15 PM
Only a 1000km or so after I got the '78 HPE back on the road (after many years of sitting still with other owners) the new front brake discs/pads get too hot and squeek with a singing noise like metal to metal. Both front discs / calipers / hubs get hot. After a short test drive the wheel bolts are almost too hot to touch. When jacking uo the front resistance to turning a wheel by hand is not more than what the drive train offers. I did not smear copper grease on the back of the pads.

Btw, there were no pad springs fitted to the old damaged hardware and no springs came with the pads so none fitted. Case closed?

As both sides are affected equally my thinking leans toward the master cylinder if it is not the springs. Any ideas?

I think most likely the callipers need a refurb if they have stood for some time they are probably not as free moving as they appear

Hi Per

You could try jacking up the front, have someone apply the brakes and see what the reaction time is to go from braked to free to move at the wheel.

No sure if this may improve with use, maybe run using light use to keep the temp down.

One quick thought came to mind. It was suggested on an old LMC thread that old flexible brake pipes can collapse with age and cause brake binding, not sure how you would check, but worth considering. If it was me I would replace them anyway if you have not already given the car being sat for so long etc.

I think it's typical with recommissioned cars that all sorts of parts only sort of function

After a bit more test driving everything bedded in again. Puh, one problem less......
