Title: Strada 130TC front brakes on a Beta?
Post by: 75coupe on January 29, 2012, 06:59:14 AM
I have been pondering what to do with the front brakes on my coupe which is used for competition. My problem is that if i want to run in historic class "S" in Australia I need to retain 14" wheels, and standard super duplex system, which rules out any serious mods.

I can obtain race pads from the US from Porterfied, although they will be $300 for a set......... just wondered if anyone had experience with uprated pads and the std setup?

I also noticed that the Strada Abarth 130TC uses 243mm vented front discs, and a similar Bendix caliper, with pad size virtually identical to Beta. I was wondering whether anyone had experimented with the 130TC vented disc and Beta caliper? I know the disc is 20mm thick as opposed to 12.7mm for std, but the 130TC pads are only 15mm thick as opposed to 17mm for the Beta, so overall the difference is only 3.2mm? The 130TC also has the wheel hub integral with the disc as the Beta does, so would save hassle there too?

There are also better uprated pad selection for the 130TC....Your thoughts please anyone?

First I would be fitting big intakes in the front bumper and large bore hose to push cold air over the existing calliper/ disc assembly as your challenge is heat killing the pads. Definitely worth getting a 130 calliper disc and carrier set from a breaker plus new pads to experiment with to find out about disc offset and whether the 130 TC pads will fit in the carriers either as is or with light machining. The biggest issue will be whether the calliper carriers will fit the diameter and offset of the 130tc discs and pad length. If the 130TC carriers will fit the Beta callipers and hub and 130tc disc with minor spacing I would go for it. Just be aware removing metal removes strength and longer bolts must be strong bolts i.e. at least 10 grade possibly 12.9 which means cap heads need to fit in the space with load washers.

As the standard carriers are machined cast Iron they can not be cut and shut in any way so if new carriers are needed you need new laser cut steel items as alloy items would need careful stress analysis with the sliding action and sharp cut outs for the pads.

I hope this helps.
PS if you are allowed to change the callipers the Alfa 155 257 x 20 discs will fit inside the 14 inch wheels maybe needing a spacer behind the disc. You would use 4x 44.5mm pistons in alloy callipers (Wilwood, HiSpec AP etc with racing seals) and use the mixed circuit for the front and the previous front only to the rear with an adjustable rear compensator close to full open. You have a wide choice of race compounds with these options and I would try Ferrodo DS3000 for track as a starter with DS2500 for road.

The seat ibiza Disk  have 251 diameter and 4x98 hole. That dim seems near the lancia....

Finding a bolt on option is a hard work....

The outer diameter and bolt holes placement is not enough to fit the brakes. This discs you mentioned have no centering flanges, and probably have different depth...

So

I've draw beta disk and 130 tc with pads....

Pads from Renault 5 Alpine Turbo are the same as the 130TC brake pad.

There is 3mm large with vented solution... but It needs real parts to verify.

To fit the disk as it is larger, The caliper needs to be cut.

I think it's an option who fragilize the caliper, as it show in the drawing.

AS I find 130 TC caliper I verify the swap of them.....
