Title: Alternative expansion tank.
Post by: MattNoVAT on March 17, 2011, 11:05:26 PM
For some time I have been looking for an alternative for the expansion tank as these are fast becoming difficult to source and fail with age.

So, I think I've found a cheap and reasonably easy to source alternative, which looks pretty damn close and only requires a small modification to the fixing bracket.

See attached photo, it has the overflow, return pipe and main inlet into the cooling system all in more or less the right place:

This came off a 1987 Mercedes 500 SEC and cost me £20.

I noticed that there is another Merc that has a similar expansion tank but has a sensor fitted, size and piping look very similar and it's not an issue to either blank off the sensor hole or just nip the terminals off it and leave it in situ. (see link below)

I wouldn't be surprised if an MG TF tank would fit seems a very similar shape and size as carb cars

you would have to use a TF plastic cap though which may or may not be rated right but is very similar to those fitted on Dedras and the like (possibly identical)
