Title: 81 Spyder sil trim fixing
Post by: Clifford on November 21, 2022, 07:03:28 PM
Hello all.
I have finally managed to obtain some metal/rubber trims for my Spyder which fit in the lip at the top of the sils below the doors.

I would be interested in people's thoughts and experience on fixing these to the car.
I believe they were originally fixed to the sils and bottoms of front and rear wings using plastic trim fixings (which I think Mark W has on the parts website but currently doesn't have stock of) which pushed into drilled holes.
Whilst this is the authentic way to do it, I am concerned that drilling holes and fixing in this way is creating water traps and consequently rust issues.
I am considering using 3M automotive trim tape instead.

I would be interested in people's views and experiences re these trims please.
Cheers
C

If you do drill them the holes can come in handy to inject or top up your cavity wax.

I have holes for plastic push in fasteners. The holes were made large enough for the paint to stay in place with the clips fitted. The clips are the kind you fit first then screw a plastic screw into to lock them in. This kind of clip is not as aggressive to the paint because chipped paint equals rust later.

I hope this is of some help

Eric
