Hi

Finally managed to take the Coupe out for a 40 mile spin lunch time and everything was fine (carburettor still needs sorting and the timing is a bit out). I then popped out at 5pm to pick my son up from work and 3 miles down the road it stalled, it restarted ok but with a puff of smoke. Stopped for 10 mins and when I restarted it was smoking a bit and there was now power, it started to pull better but still a bit smokey, 1/2 mile up the road it cleared itself, pulling OK and no smoke. Once home there was a bit of a petrol smell from under the bonnet but put that down to my dirty carb.

What do you think happened?

Car has only done 66k miles but with little use in last few years.

Maybe flooding carb and may be due to crud in return line or duff float?

I was wondering if it was something like that, time for carb rebuild kit, do you know the best place to get one from?

Definitely sounds like dirt in the carburettor. Lots of threads in the carb section about this.

If you Google 'Weber Carburettor' there are several UK based specialists who will supply the rebuild kits. They come up on ebay as well. However the carb body really needs to go in one of those ultrasonic cleaning baths to get a guaranteed result, as there are so many small drillings that harbour dirt. A blow through with an airline might get it all out, but might not.

This has been an ongoing issue with my car and I'm coming round to a professional rebuild of the carburettor.

At the end of the day, Betas don't respond well to low usage. In my experience, the more mileage you do, the better they run.

Well I went to move the car to a better position to finally do a rebuild on the carb but it would not start, traced this to the fuel pump not working. So I started to remove the carb and pump but when I removed the air cleaner there was some oil around the filter. Any ideas? I'm assuming it's the fact that I've only done about 100 miles this year.
So I suppose my issue was also the pump starting to go.

I'll post this in the carb section also.

Hi

On many cars of this age there was a breather pipe from the crankcase up to the filter housing so that any crankcase oil/air mixture is burnt in the engine, rather than just put out into the atmosphere, this was due to legislation I think at the time. On older cars there is often a catch can for the oil. I suspect that is where the oil is coming from.
