What is the general consensus regarding the rear window frames.

All four we have are rusted pretty bad and wondering what everyone else has done with theirs?

Are the frames easily found?

You need the later series ones as they are stainless, proviso I don't know for certain that they fit. I wouldn't have thought they'd be expensive but shipping could be as they will be complete with glass, make sure you get matching tint as they do vary.

Don's cars are pre-facelift, so it seems likely that the later ones (2nd facelift?) won't fit??

As for price it's the usual ebay thing when they come up, depending who wants them. I've seen a pair go for £25 I think.

The doors are the same size so I guess that the rear windows are also similar I think it's just the roof profile that's different but don't know for sure

I have a pair of rear windows taken off a S3 Coupé (so black painted stainless). Been boxed for 2+ years.

As RossoCorsa says, the black paint can be removed quite easily.  I'll dig them out and send pictures via PM

Hi Dom, apologies - have been doing 15 hour days!!  Nearing the end tho.

So I dig around in the storage barn and found the box, one side is perfect, no rust and complete, the other side however has succumbed to internal rust and the frame has separated in one corner.

Sorry to deliver bad news after the wait

Hi,

I have a two sets of the rear windows that were taken from 1981 ish 2000 carb coupes that I stripped for parts. How would we verify that they are the right items? I would hate to ship them to Australia only to find they were wrong type. Both are stainless steel. One has chrome handles the other has black but otherwise they are visually the same.

There is a small complication that I will not be able to access them until Monday-Tuesday but after that they will be to hand.

regards,

Doug

Hi Dom,

Here are two photos of one of each of the rear windows I have. I have a set of clear ones with chrome handles and blue tinted ones that have black enameled handles.Hopefully you can tell the difference from the pix. Pix are the inside. The outside is in good condition without damage.

I said that both sets were stainless. On closer examination it seems that the tinted ones definitely are and the clear ones may not be. Even so the clear ones are in pretty good condition.

Since there were doubts expressed by Neil that there were different sizes I measured the one I have. So :

Curved top 625 mm, hinge side 367 mm, handle end 140mm and straight bottom side 492mm. Those are the actual frame measurements excluding the hinge.

Please PM me if you want to discuss further. I can send less compressed photos if you need.

Doug
