What a pain in the bum. Whilst on our way to Italian car and bike night at the ace cafe in London, The clutch pedal hit the floor as I approached a junction. Cry

So damage limitation meant an about turn and head for home whilst practicing  my gear changing ability without a clutch!

So today it was down to work only to find that the ball joint had broken from the top of  the pedal. As I am sure you are aware, removing the pedal means a strip out of the steering column and pedal box which as I said before, is a pain in the bum. So with the pedal box off and pedal removed I had to refit (temporary) the column and pedal box to get the spyder back into my rented garage 100 meters from my home. After dropping the column on my head and cutting my ear LOL the car was again back under cover. Now the pedal is off to my friend to TIG weld the ball joint and then refit all parts in time for it's MOT and some spring time use.

Haven't heard of this happening before. I guess the metal became fatigued. Worth checking that the rest of the mechanism is working smoothly when you refit it all. Could the rocker mechanism that the pedal works on to operate the cable be stiff? That would load a lot of extra stress on the top of the pedal.

I guess LHD cars never have these problems. The RHD mechanism is a bit Heath Robinson all in all.

Exact same thing happened to me many years ago while visiting a girlfriend in Bedford, about 50 miles from home.

A royal pain in the butt it was to fix it.

I have seen this 4 times over the years and I expect to see it again as the design is not very strong so stiff cables and gearbox clutch arm pivots overload the ball pivots.

All welded now with welding on both sides. The pivot arm under the bonnet was a little stiff and of course the ball joint on this has been welded. So fun and games await with I expect the best bit, getting the spring back on the pedal. I can picture this flying off and hitting me smack between the eyes.  Shocked
