I have an ie engine running twin 40s (not sure if this is relevant?) in my 79 Spyder and am in need of a new exhaust.

The current exhaust is an aftermarket 4 into 1 (no obvious branding) and is 'straight through' to the back box (which appears to be a standard back box).  The manifold and flexi section seem ok so I am only looking at replacing from here back to keep costs down (unless a full system works out cheaper).

I plan to make up the centre section from stainless tube but am concerned about compatability of teh back box.  Am I right in thinking that the back boxes are different across both models (ed couple, VX, Spyder  etc.) AND engine size?

One option I have with my back box (which will soon need binning) is to cut off the curved pipe and weld on another box / silencer of similar dimensions but a direct replacement would be easier.

So ........

Can anyone confirm back box compatability?

or has anyone got a Spyder back box (any condition) they want to part with?

Hi

No idea on how many variants, would have to dive into the parts manual to see. I do know there were the main two types of systems offered, the early push on type and the later ball and clamp on type. I have a few back boxes, some in not great state, you can have one of the not so good ones FOC if you want it, but they are all the push on type, not the later ball and clamp.

VX and IE both have a belled union joint, where as the earlier cars just have a standard sleeve fit.

You cannot use the Berlina (sedan) back box as the hanging bracket is on the opposite side.  The HPE has a longer chromed tail, if you fit that it will protrude beyond the bumper.

Coupe and spiders share same back box, HPE can be used but you need to chop off a bit of the chrome section otherwise it can fail the MOT.

Hope that helps

Spiders are reckoned to have a so called swan neck back box, ie coupe has a straight chrome rear pipe but carb versions of same series have pipe kinked off to the side even on the vx. It's another confusing subject, I've seen many variations of exhausts I once had two OE early front pipes of slightly differing shapes for instance etc etc. the basic layout of the S2FL2 differs from earlier cars with a different box layout and an additional long slim longitudinal box. The flex section on S2FL2 cars is a good idea as the earlier exhaust can suffer from stress cracks especially if any engine mounts, steady bar or dampers are worn or failed.

Notice the number of variations on some parts according to type and/or market plus updates as well.

Hi all. I know this is an old link but hopefully it will be picked up. I was due to attend the track day last Saturday until the back box holed and parted company. I have a 1977 Spyder 2000 series two pre face lift. I was about to order a stainless steel full system from Betaboyz, but I see Mark has now posted that none are available as he is looking for a new maker! I've looked on Ebay etc and there are a few companies advertising what might be the right thing, but no pics available. So, Peter, I see you had some push on back boxes at the time of this post and wonder if you or anyone else has one to spare that I can buy. Alternatively does anyone know  where I can get one, one that fits I mean,

Many thanks
Derek Moore

I still have my spare swan neck and I think I've got an old cherry bomb lying around too.

Matt had first dibs on the swan neck but if he not longer needs it you'd be welcome to it.

Hi Derek

I have a few rear boxes, only one new one, so if you still need one let me know.

Swan necks are a funny subject I once checked my (considerable) beta brochure collection and it seems that swan necks on spi(y)ders are a peculiarly British phenomenon.

Hi all

Many thanks to Stuart and Peter for your fantastic prompt replies. What a great place this forum is! As Stuart offered first, and I think is nearest to me, can I take up your offer unless there was after all a prior claim to it. Let me know Stuart how to get to you and I'll collect it and hand over the cash. If it's gone after all, do you mind Peter if I then come up to you?

Regards

Derek,

I'll check with Matt - so long as he doesn't need it anymore it's yours.
