Are there any struts fot more common makes+models that can be used? Hard to get hold of here and freight + vat + handling charges tend to make things expensive whe importing even minor items.

I have searched the marked thoroughly and didn't find any part that could fit HPEs. Mainly because the HPE struts are of high compression force (830N) and have quite short stroke (115mm). The genuine parts were made by Stabilus (Lift-O-Mat 399671) and they are no longer available. There are also no substitutes on the marked presently. Finally I found the manufacturer in Hungary, that made me a pair to order.

I found these, and cost even including freight, customs and handling are within the realm of reality. Anybody tried them?

The cost I indicated is the rough money I paid in total, including shipment within EU. The delivery time is up to 2weeks, as the units are not from a shelf, but made to order.

Have you already mounted your struts? How do they look and work?

Mine are uprated to suit also a VX and look almost like OEs

I have not fitted mine yet but they look just like the OEs and were matched to the OE part numbers. Their site list quite a few part numbers that were used on the HPE through the years so I expect them to work as OE too.

Mine too, and need a bit force to shut the tailgate as it is the spoilerless type.
