Title: Supercharging a standared 2.0L
Post by: ABland on October 06, 2010, 09:04:19 PM
I am currently undergoing a engine re-build on my 1978 beta, but also trying to improve the power. Is it easy to install a super charger?

(I'm only 16 and still learning mechanics  :) )

Hi and welcome !

There are a number of differences between the supercharged engine and the standard one.

Most significant is the different compression ratio - you'd need to find a way to do this on the standard engine too. It's not impossible but it makes it a bit more of a challenge. Other problems would be finding the correct inlet manifold, carb and supercharger.

It would probably be cheaper to go down the standard tuning route of twin webers, ported head and exhaust - It's relatively simple to get 140-150 bhp that way which is more than the supercharged engine makes.

What sort of Beta is it ? Pics?

Looks like a pretty tidy series 1 you've got there.

Where did you take the pics ? Looks like the sort of facilities I'd kill for !

If you want quick power pretty much the only way to 'bolt it on' is with twin 40 Webers and a 4 branch manifold which should give you around 130bhp when set up corectly.

Everything else will involve a full strip down of the engine - if you're going to do that anyway a ported head is the best choice. perhaps with an increased compression ratio.

I think a different head would be the best option because i cross threaded a spark a while back, and the reason for the engine coming out was to have it heli-coiled!

Thanks :)

Looks a bit rough! But functional I suppose. I believe Protoxide of Italy do a turbo manifold for the Beta. Not cheap but it could be worth a look.

Cheers R
