Title: Indicators not working but hazards do!
Post by: JohnMacleod on August 13, 2022, 04:10:39 PM
Hi everyone!
I very recently got myself a 1978 Beta Spider 2000 which requires a little attention.
The biggest one at the moment is the fact the indicators don't work off the column but do work if the hazards are on.
Are there any obvious things I should check before rummaging through the steering column wiring?

Cheers!

Hi John,

The hazard switch is a major part of the indicator system and carries
connections internally which, if dirty or faulty, can give your symptoms.

Also, fuse box connections, inside and at the bottom outside plugs.
Also, earths. There is a multiple earth connection point behind the instrument cluster
which needs periodic terminal cleaning.

The column switch also gives issues, but not normally indicator problems.

Good luck
Nigel

Hi Nigel,

I'm jumping on the back of this thread, as my indicators are all working but they are very dim - too dim to be seen easily in bright conditions.
Is it likely that the hazard switch might be the culprit in my case do you think?
Regards Chris

Hi Chris,
Yes it is possibly the hazard switch. Internally it's a fascinating thing
consisting of a 4 wheeled bogie that moves over several contacts when switched.
Some or all of these multiple contacts could be causing different levels of
resistance, which then feed into the indicator circuit.
It can be taken apart without drama, although there are some small springs involved
which, if not contained, will fly into the ether.

Used spares are available, but of course you never know what you're getting.
Worth a punt though.
