Title: Identify function of gearbox plug
Post by: Nigel on July 03, 2021, 02:26:27 PM

I noticed for the first time this plug, which in appearance and position
looks like a filler point, but it's far too high to be a level indicator.

I have always filled via the dipstick hole, but perhaps
this is a filler?

Hi Nigel

When you re-build a box this is removed to insert a lozenge that locates the shift levers. It is made of incredibly soft aluminum making it scary to remove and re-fit.

Thanks Eric.

So, if I understand correctly, it's access to a gallery behind the lever shafts,
used to keep them in position?

Hi Nigel

I refer you to the Haynes Manual gearbox re-build section and you will understand. The Haynes Beta Manual is actually helpful for a gearbox build.
