Title: Is it possible to Turbo Charge a coupe ?
Post by: George-S on September 10, 2018, 09:45:33 AM
Hello,

I was thinking of Super charging my beta coupe, but since then have realised I may be opening a can of worms by attempting it.. seems that the super chargers are nearly impossible to source and generally speaking aren’t very reliable from what people have said.

I have been thinking of turbo charging instead as that setup is slightly easier generally speaking ..
But the obvious issue is that the beta has next to no room towards the rear of the engine, my question is has anyone successfully managed to perform this on a coupe? or is it simply not possible?
If so can you give me an idea of how I would go about it ?
I have a 1.6 1979 beta coupe.

Cheers George

I'm not aware of anyone that's done it but it's perfectly possible  - you could use the setup from an early Delta HF Turbo ( not the ie version) or get a custom manifold made. There's more than enough space behind the engine. You'd need to be careful with heat management.

Hi

Before you discount the supercharger, perhaps you should read up on Eric's Monte and forthcoming Spyder. Not trivial of course, but a way forward perhaps?

With a 1.6 wouldn't it be just better to build it up to a fast road spec?

Don't forget that the HF Delta carb turbos had a different head/lower CR and ( I think) special valve materials to cope with the heat. Don't know how interchangeable the key bits are though.

I didn't say it would be simple.....

To be fair if I were going down this route (and I have thought about it) I'd go for throttle bodies and ECU with a custom manifold and knock sensor(s).

Why not get the setup off a Thema turbo (inlet and exhaust) and add an aftermarket computer then you have programmable injection and can set boost and feeling to not kill the engine?. having said that i don't know if the 1.6 has a physically smaller head than the 1800 or 2000, if it's not then they'll fit.

I would have thought a VX head would be the best option ???

Thanks for everyone replies !

Stuart might give what you said a shot .. still a down the pipeline but nice to plan these things..

Any other ideas/thoughts anyone ?

I think the Thema was a reversed head version  - inlets at the back exhaust at the front.
