Title: Near immaculate Beta Coupe 2000i.e for sale
Post by: ah_sprite on July 24, 2018, 03:09:19 PM
Hi all,

I thought I'd make a quick post on here before advertising on the 'usual sites' later this week.

I have an '82 Beta Coupe 2000i.e for sale. It was subject to a full professional rebuild some years ago but remains incredibly original throughout. Just 67k from new, and just 9000 since the rebuild. It has been in the hands of the elderly previous owner for 25 years.

Bodywork and paintwork done by an ex Aston Martin panelbeater, and remains excellent throughout with very few defects. Engine bay is truly stunning, as is the underside. All trim appears to be present and correct, and the interior is in incredibly good order. Recent new tyres and a long MOT.

Engine rebuild (honed and not bored out, with new rings etc - it had only done 57k!).

It would say that it will probably be the best 2000i.e on sale worldwide. Compared to what others have sold for in recent years, I don't think £8350ono is an unreasonable amount - you may tell me otherwise!

I'm going to keep both for now and see how I get on. If I settle with the ie I might consider parting with the 1300, especially if storage becomes an issue with my plans to move house....

Well, it's been a while since I picked up the ie and although cosmetically immaculate as stated it did have some rather serious driving issues once I got it on the road. Certainly an interesting addition to the 'should classics be MOT'd' debate, because this one was, very recently, and it isn't worth the paper it is printed on.

However I'd luckily bought from a reputable dealer and negotiated a substantial re-fund to cover rectifying the list of faults that had come up. I suppose as the car had only covered 380 miles in 8 years I should have expected this, but it has been a lesson learned for me in not taking a car at it's (very nice) face value.

Anyway, onward and upward. I've fixed the slipping clutch and obstructive gear change, so once I've sorted a leaking fuel pipe and the brakes in general I recon I will have a very nice car. Some of the visitors to the Manchester Classic Car Show certainly thought so.

What I find a little worrying is that a reputable dealer sold it without noticing the faults or perhaps without thinking they needed sorting.

Still well done for getting a discount and for retuning such a great example back to the road.

Hi Neil

Despite the issues, I still think you have one with all the basics right and with no real hard to fix issues, mechanical problems are soooo much easier to resolve than say rotten turrets.....

All the best, are we seeing it at the NEC?

Peter

Probably not unfortunately. Unless I can overcome some logistical problems that have come up re where I need to be late that Sunday.

Wow! Stunning!!

I'm new to this forum and am searching for a Beta Coupe - I had one back in the 80s - TBW32X and have never really got over it.  Just started searching last week and saw the advert for this one... Had I started looking a a couple of months ago, you might have bad some competition!

Congratulations Neil - looks beautiful!!

Michael

Thanks for the spot Eric. Just moved house so don't have 60 Euro spare this month, otherwise would have been tempted even at that price....

So, I think that you have all gathered that though 'near immaculate' body wise, my ie was far from immaculate from a mechanical viewpoint. The point at which I was going to tackle the main concerns around the brakes was always going to be the MOT, which came round in mid June. It was a fairly spectacular fail as I was expecting, with all four brakes plus the hand brake, not making the (pretty low) grade. Added to that was a split CV boot, a hole in the exhaust (which I also knew about) and the drivers seat belt, which was a surprise.

It all begs the question of how it was fit for the test one year and 1003 miles earlier? This was done in the tenure of the previous owner, not the dealer I bought the car from, and I suspect that they knew he didn't drive it and just gave him a walk over. A very dangerous attitude if so.

The repairs then became something of a saga, which is why the car didn't make it's hoped for appearance at Beta Meeta. I found a generic seat belt that fitted and it does look quite nice, but that took a week. Then on re-test the rear off side caliper seal failed. Off to Bigg Red it went with a promised 5 day turnaround which morphed into 16 days.

Anyway, I finally got the car back on Thursday, and although it also missed a jaunt to Scotland for my friends wedding, it will hopefully be go for the LMC National Weekend in two weeks.

The one positive for me in all this is that the refund I got from the dealer, which was a complete finger in the air, covered all the parts and repairs bar the princely sum of £4.33, and I'm not sure that Bigg Red have accounted for my £20 deposit correctly, so I might get that back too.

Don't buy a car without a thorough test drive!

Hi Neil

I would take a few mechanical issues over bodywork on a Beta anytime and the brakes are easy to work on if primitive by today's standards. It sounds like you now have an excellent car.

Cheers

Eric

Agreed, simple (If irritating) fixes.

Sometimes you wonder. I've just replaced the discs and pads on my 406 as the previous owners garage used good quality  pads but on badly corroded discs which A ate them and B reduced the effective disc size by about 20% That had a brand new MOT too.

I always take the view that even the most immaculate car advertised would need a lot of rectification work, it is amazing what owners put up with or don't care about. Then again maybe I'm too fussy?

I forgot to mention that the above costings also included replacing the cambelt and front crankshaft oil seal. I did spot the oil leak there when I bought the car, but after 300 miles on the GNW it was worse that I'd first appreciated....

The ie got a proper work out over the last week. First a run down to the LMC National Weekend of circa 300 miles, then a camping trip in the Yorkshire Dales where it was hammered round the narrow and steep roads. Great to be able to tear up steep inclines in third rather than second with apparently endless torque.

I also had to do two emergency stops. One coming onto the M69 (the Mini two in front had to swerve onto the hard shoulder to avoid rear ending the car that stopped for no apparent reason!) then on one of the gravel strewn narrow roads in the Dales. So the brakes are certainly working, locking up a couple of the wheels on the gravel.

It was good to see the i.e in the metal at the AGM, ... I'am now quite jealous, One day I might have proper paint too!

Great to see a Beta being used properly, tons of room for camping gear in any Beta. Think we all need to drive our cars 5000 miles pr year minimum :)

After reliably driving through some shocking conditions to the NEC then a nice night drive back, it was sad to say goodbye to the ie! Ironically the 15 months ownership was just a little less than the time I had my previous ie (18 months). Anyway, it seems to have gone to a great enthusiast. He lives near Grimsby, so you might spot it around Alan.

Only know Steve near here, Lancisti and particularly Beta enthusiasts are thin on the ground. If there's another maybe need to have a get together
