Just replacing my sump gasket and wondered if it is necessary to also use any sealant on it to get a guaranteed seal or just use the gasket? I have just rebuilt my engine, (using the cork gasket) and used a bit of blue hylomar blue sealant around the joins, and also smeared a bit of grease on the engine side of the gasket - as it recommends in the Haynes manual. I think that the main reason for doing the latter, is so that it's easier to remove in the future. (http://sump.jpg) Title: Re: Sump (and other gaskets) to use sealant as well? Post by: HFStuart on November 18, 2016, 11:00:29 AM Make sure the sump face is flat though - if the sump bolts have been over tightened or fitted without washers at some point the flange will have bent around the bolts leading to leaks between them. I've always used a smear of red hermatite (or similar) and have not had any problems
