Title: Re-sizing Photos
Post by: Neil-yaj396 on October 30, 2016, 09:33:56 AM
What programme/apps are people using? I've just realised that anything not taken on my old Blackberry won't fit on the Forum.

On the same topic should we up our photo sizes? I know that the LMC Forum will take much bigger photos, but I'm guessing there is a cost implication?

I always link to an external site rather than use the forum gallery I find it's easier and presumably doesn't impact on forum costs that way(???)

Hi Neil

I use all Apple kit now and iPhoto has resizing as an option when you export them, so no extra app required.

If you're running Microsoft Windows, then there is a built-in app within the Office suite called Picture Manager. That has a number of options to resize and compress photos. Alternatively an account on Photobucket or Flickr will do the job. That's the option I use, although I reduce the size of pics before uploading them, as having to scroll up/down and left/right to see all of a picture is a pain.

If you are using Windows then Picasa which is free from Google is very good for basic manipulation of photos.

Currently we have set the maximum photo size too 800x800px, this helps keep our Bandwidth usage down.
We can increase this a little if needed.
The problem with modern high pixel cameras/phones is they are producing original images in excess of 6000 pixels wide
and file sizes touching 20mb, most photos will need re-sizing for use on forums.

I find it easier to link to free external photos sites and It helps our site usage, I use Flickr and once uploaded its easy, hit the button "view all sizes", select your size, right click on photo.
select "copy image address", click on the insert image tab in your post and paste the address between the brackets.
this image is 800 pixels wide:

Happy to up the size limit on the forum if needed.
Thanks
Tony

Hi Tony,

If using an external photo hosting site helps the forum save money, then this should be the recommended option. I run a photobucket account purely to post images on forums for just that reason. A couple of sites I frequent prefer people to upload images to forum storage so that images don't get 'lost' over time, but they're the minority.
