Title: Performance upgrade for 1600 coupe with standard carb.
Post by: betasulo on August 08, 2016, 06:34:07 PM
Dear all,

I would like to up the performance on my series1 1600cc coupe. The car is stock standard and without going for a twin carb setup is it advisable to go for electronic ignition and would it improve performance?
Furthermore would a K&N filter help the standard carb? And is there any point in going for fast road cams with this setup. All this is for a hill climb which is to be run on the 9th of September.
As the hill climb is at an elevation of approximately 1868 meters (6128 feet) from sea level would any of you be able to advise which jet sizes to use?
Any help is highly appreciated.

Kind regards
Sulo

Electronic ignition tends to be more stable at high rpm as there are no points to bounce.

A K&N won't do any harm, especially if the original filter is old.

Good fast road cams are worth it but to be honest a set of 40's is not much more expensive and will give more of an instant boost.

You might try Guy Crofts website  / forum for the jetting.

Hi Stuart,

Thank you very much for the info. Would you be able to recommend a supplier for the electronic ignition as I believe this should be the first step?

I would recommend trying to find and install a complete genuine set. Second hand is not expensive and installation is just straightforward.

Hi

You could go for a halfway house on the ignition and use your points to drive the ignition. These were recommended by a Fulvia user on the LMC site from memory. Obviously your disti would need to be in good condition, but would keep the correct advance curve.

Dear Gents,

Thank you for all the help and information. I am told by some of the classic car boys down here that there are two types of ignition. One the optical and the other a magnetic. I would need a complete solution with a new coil as well. I just need to find a vendor in the Uk .
