Title: 1979 gas cap
Post by: aldad138 on December 15, 2015, 05:09:05 AM
Any ideas?  Mine is gone, can't seem to find one.  Bayless has up to 1978

She is finally on the road!  Work in progress...but, on the road!

Anyone have photo of what you need as curious how it is different to earlier ones?

Yes, I thought they were all the same until they moved up the wing on the ie/VX?

My fuel cap is threaded brass as of 1977 if that helps. I thought all the carb ones were.

Likewise - threaded brass here as well. Not always easy to get it correctly threaded at first attempt. Not sure if that is a quirk of mine or 'they're all like that, Sir...'

I know the 79 carb US model was an oddball model (engine wise), and the tank piping arrangement on the US ones is different if I remember, so it may have a different neck and cap to cover US regs at the time?

I only have the earlier parts book, which I think does not cover 79 cars.

Bayless, here in the States, says 1979 and up has a different narrower neck, due to the switch to unleaded gas only.  They say the up to 1978 will not fit.  I trust Bayless more than I would other sources.

I know I can't drive around forever with out a gas cap...

... Mine us brass, threaded on the outside though like you are all describing.  I think the issue is the inside of the cap, that descends toward the opening.
