Title: Whining- not me, the car. Post by: smithymc on May 20, 2014, 12:40:45 PM I can appreciate that this is near impossible from a distance, but here goes.
When the long-dormant car went back on the road, I got a nasty whine , felt through the wheel, when turning left. It went away after a few days and I put it down to lack of use. Guess what? Its back. My first thought was a stuck caliper, but both hubs are cool even after a longish drive and you can push the car with one hand, hot or cold, so don't think it is that. Any thoughts? Boots are good- the car came with a replacement one for a boot that went presumably when the car was last on the road the early 1980s- so I know that one at least has fresh grease in. Easy to talk oneself out of checking the other one, but needs to be done to eliminate suspects. Mark Title: Re: Whining- not me, the car. - like rubbing a finger on a wine glass rim. In an idle 5 mins between various DIY distress I read the Haynes, which seemed rather inconsistent. As I read it the rack with damper is ZF? It then describes the lubrication as grease. However, in the stripping section it describes draining the oil, but not re-filing it. How much if a pain is getting the rack out of the car? I think there is a ref somewhere for the type of oil, cannot remember where I have seen it...., but will be needing it when I can order the replacement gaiter from Mark. It states 200cc's of SAE 90 oil to fill the rack housing, It also mentions grease, which I take to be within the actual gaiters?
No mention of rack manufacturer, but both of my Coupes have had the damper, which is clearly visible on top of the rack, offset slightly to the left. Title: Re: Whining- not me, the car.
