Title: Fuel tank colour
Post by: smithymc on June 11, 2013, 11:46:09 AM
I thought at first sight the tank was silver. However, when you wipe the dust and crud (which may once have been paint) off, it comes up black.

Any ideas?

Hi Mark

Not sure what you are after, but my tank was black painted then with a layer of underseal on it on the underside, but no underseal on the top where it is next to the boot floor and the most likelylace to be rusty.

Peter is so right,  my tank was much worse on the top than underneath.  It was so bad it had to be replaced with an aluminium tank.

Mine was like Peters, when I renovated it I treated the top with undercoat & sealer.

Hi Mark

I cleaned it up with a wire brush mounted in a drill and then painted with Hammerite and finally waxoyl it all over before refitting.

One thing to check is that your level sensor is working ok and if you have any rust internally in the tank. If there is a sign of rust a few here have had the tanks internally lined, see separate thread for that.
