I've just had a load of my Beta alloys sandblasted and afterwards, I noticed a considerable difference in the quality of the bare metal between the Cromodora and FPS brands with the Cromodoras appearing far superior in texture and finish with a much sharper defined edge between the rim and the spokes.
Do I just have the bad luck of having some crappy examples of the FPS brand or is this an accurate reflection of the quality?

Yep, FPS are a lower quality alloy.  The Cromadora alloys seem to have been fitted to later cars.  But you'll frequently find a mixture fitted to some cars as it is assumed that all Standard Beta alloys are the same and over the cars lifetime wheels get swapped about.

I'll have to get my remaining Cromodoras stripped so.
I'm finishing the rims in a sort of silver/grey with the centres a medium anthracite so a well-defined rim is important.

I bought my extra set of FPS already blasted. This blasting may have been too aggresive, but the underlying grain was certainly pretty variable and took a lot of prep at the refurbishers.

My "refurb" was more by way of experiment on this set to see if a half-blind man with a shake in his hands (yes, me) could mask and paint them to an acceptable degree.
When I put them on, I'm having the five Cromodoras which are currently on the car blasted and I'll take my time and remove all imperfections although I suspect they'll be better overall than the FPS products anyway.
I have another four FPS wheels but I'm not going to waste time on them, just keep them in case the worst comes to the worst some day and I need a wheel.

I have a set of Cromodora Monte Carlo rims (CD85) that I am told are substantially differnet than their FPS counterparts. The Cromodoras are magnesium (with steel inserts) and the FPS aluminium. I have never seen Cromodora Beta rims so maybe they did not make their way to North America. No chance that the Beta Cromodoras are magnesium, eh?

Never crossed my mind. They are extremely lightweight though so now you have me thinking.
Those monte Carlo wheels are quite rare and relitavely valuable I think, especially if they are the 14" with the deeper offset and look similar to the coupe/spider/HPE ones.

Sounds interesting I would very much like to see the finished product - I was thinking of doing something similar but with a polished rim

This is one of the FPS wheels.
I was thinking of having the rim polished, but the raised bit where the valve is mounted intrudes on the face of the dish so you can't polish the surface sompletely bach to the spokes/hub part and that's why I settled on painting it.

Cromodora CD160 are definitely not magnesium rims.

Goodyear Eagle NCT 185/60/14 rear and Firestone 185/60/14 front.
They'll be on the car early next week I hope as I'm waiting for chrome valves to arrive first.
