Post by: Iain on May 24, 2012, 12:04:47 AM
Anybody know of suppliers of recon steering racks for non PAS Coupes?

Ian,

I recon manual TRW steering racks, but I swapped one out this weekend just past.  When I get back from holiday I will be overhauling the exchange item and that will then be available.

Ok, cheers, the rack is going to a local specialist for examination so I'll see how thet get on but I might need to come back to you.

Iain,

I would also advise checking the condition of the lower ball joints and the wishbone bushes as these can affect handling is they are worn.

Thanks for the advice re the balljoints and wishbone bushes, I had these all replaced last year.  Unfortunately the news from the local steering specialist is not good, apparently the rack is too far gone to be reconditioned.  When would that one of yours be available?

I'm back at work on 18th June - so sometime after then.  If thats too long then I understand so maybe post something in the wanted section to see if anyone else can help out.

Hi Ian I have a PAS rack if you'd consider converting it to manual or using the internals to refurb your current rack?

If you loop the hydraulic pipes to eachother it effectively becomes a manual rack, unsure if turn-to-turn is same but could be an option if you're desperate.

Cheers

The bulkhead is different on power steering cars so it's not just a simple swap over sadly.

If it were we'd all be swapping over to power steering !

I have a bulkhead spare too matt if you want it ;) hehehheeeeeeee

Sorry my lack of knowledge must annoy you, it annoys me.

Just for the record are the internal parts useable in a manual rebuild? Are the lock-to-locks the same?

Sorry for barging in on the thread....

Dan

Cutting out and patching in a section of the bulkhead is not a five minute job!

Engine out, dash out, heater matrix and fan system out - all complicated & hard work. And you've not even got the welder out yet.

I do not think the internals are interchangeable.

Hi Dan,

I'd be surprised if the ratio (lock to lock) is the same on both racks - power steering racks generally have a larger lock to lock number.

Cheers
