How can I tell what series Beta I own or what Generation it is?

You need to look at the chassis plate on the off side inner wing there will be an identification number there  828 BS.1FL is what I think your looking for which makes it a 2nd Series Face Lift.

gets a bit more involved with north american cars they had several model year updates as well (to keep up with the then rapidly changing regulations), I'm afraid I can't help much with that as I'm not well up on it but I had assumed yours to be 1979 model year which would be part of S2FL in European terms. Because of the complexities of North American model ranges it really would be worth asking on Lancisti.net as there are a lot of US Beta owners on there. If it has the later style dashboard and the squared off roof edges (near the gutter) it is a S2FL most likely a '79 model year
